from rare books collection
Geographical maps are an important historical source. Their
role is unique as valuable historical evidence, defining
historical process in the context with territorial aspects.
They reflect not only the level of development of geographical
science, but also they graphically demonstrate specifics
of the human knowledge development process.
Maps are the product of the historical epochs and cultures
and a marvelous monument of the human civilization.
The Academic library collection contains a number of geographical
maps, a large amount of which are in the books. The maps
included in the old books are of a special interest. The
Rare books collection of the Academy library of Tajikistan
contains of a significant amount of such maps. The most
attractive for the researcher are the maps of Central –
Asian region and the neighboring territories, what can
be explained in the first place by the rich history of
the people of this ancient land that shaped the geographic
appearance of this region.
Old maps can tell a lot of interesting facts from the
history, geography, and culture of this region. The most
fascination occupation is studying the toponymy, and no
wonder that historical geography as a science was developing
in close interaction with development and forming of the
geographical and cartographical sciences. This CD presents
to your attention the maps, primarily of the Central Asian
region, that are stored in the Academy library.
The oldest European geographical map is from the oldest
of the European print publications, stored in the library
book collection. This map is from the book “Cosmography”
by Iohann Gonter, Antverpen edition of 1554 year.
Another fascinating map is from the old German book on
history of Persia. This book was printed in 1754 and it
includes a very interesting map with remarkable geographical
names, reflecting level of knowledge of the Europeans about
the Central Asia in the eighteenth century.
Among the presented maps an important place take the Russian
maps of the nineteenth century, the time of active progress
of Russia into the Central Asia. There are quite detailed
geographical and topographical maps that can be useful
even at present times.
One of the maps of the highest quality is the map of Persia
and Afghanistan with the neighboring southern regions of
the Central Asia, prepared by the Military department of
Great Britain. The map was published in the series “Stanford
library of maps” in 1906.
The maps from the Rare books collection of the Academy
library of Tajikistan can be of a great interest for the
scientists and researches as well as for the general readers
who like to learn about history, geography and culture
of the Central Asian region.
